History of the Sedan Chair
A Sedan Chair is a human-power carriage used as a transport vehicle. The sedan chair is structured in a wooden frame supported by two horizontal poles. According to historical records, the Sedan Chair traces back to the Xia Dynasty (2205 - 1806 BC). It was once popularly used across China.
The Sedan Chair plays an important part in Chinese history. Its greatest importance was as a bridal chair; a traditional bride was carried to her wedding ceremony by a "shoulder carriage". Also, the Sedan Chair was once the only public conveyance in Hong Kong in the 1800's, serving the role of cabs.
